How to Craft a Harness and a Saddle
A saddle in Minecraft is a non-craftable item used to ride and control certain mobs. It’s found through dungeon or bastion loot, fishing, trading with master-level Leatherworkers, or mob drops like from saddled Striders. Some mods or updates, like Chase the Skies, add craftable harnesses for special rideable mobs such as the Happy Ghast. For more info on Happy Ghasts, check out our guide on them here.
Obtaining the Materials
For crafting a saddle or harness you would need leathers, glass blocks, an iron ingot, and wool blocks, depending on which item you're wanting to craft!
Leather
Leather is needed for both a saddle and a harness. You can defeat mobs such as Cows, Horses, Donkeys, Llamas, Mules, Hoglins to obtain leather. You can also alternatively, trade with Leatherworker villagers (apprentice level and up).
Glass Blocks
Glass blocks are needed for the harness only! You can mine sand from beaches, deserts, or rivers. Then, place the sand in a Furnace or Blast Furnace. You can smelt it using any fuel (coal, wood, etc.) to get Glass Blocks.
Wool Blocks
Wool Blocks will be needed if you're crafting a harness!
Option 1: Shearing Sheep
Craft Shears (2 iron ingots) then right-click a sheep to get 1–3 Wool. Keep in mind that sheep regrow wool by eating grass.
Option 2: Craft from String
Kill Spiders to get String. Use 4 String in a square on the crafting grid to make 1 Wool Block.
Note: You can use Dyes to color your Wool before crafting!
Iron Ingots
Iron Ingots are needed for the saddle only! You will need to smelt Iron Ore in a furnace in order to create Iron Ingots. You can smelt it using any fuel (coal, wood, etc.).
