How to Upgrade a Backpack in Hytale
Your first backpack in Hytale is a great start, but it doesn’t take long before it’s bursting at the seams. As you progress and start hauling back better loot, bigger stacks, and crafting materials, upgrading your backpack becomes less of a luxury and more of a necessity. This guide covers how to upgrade your backpack in Hytale, what materials you’ll need at each tier, and how to get the most out of the extra space.
First Upgrade
Upgrading your Workbench
To start, you’ll need at least a tier 2 workbench. Your workbench can be upgraded directly from its interface, on the right side. To do so, you will need the following:
| Material | Quantity | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| Copper Ingot | 30 | Created by smelting copper ore in a furnace. |
| Iron Ingot | 20 | Created by smelting iron ore in a furnace. |
| Linen Scrap | 20 | Commonly dropped by enemies, such as skeletons. |
Click the Upgrade button once you have all the materials in your inventory to upgrade the workbench.

Crafting the Upgrade
Once you’ve upgraded your workbench, you’ll have unlocked the ability to craft the first Backpack Upgrade. To do this, you’ll need:
| Material | Quantity | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| Cindercloth Scraps | 40 | Dropped by fire-based enemies often found in the Volcano biome. |
| Cobalt Ingot | 8 | Created by smelting cobalt ore in a furnace, commonly found in snowy regions. |
| Heavy Leather | 24 | Processing heavy hide dropped by large animals, such as bears or crocodiles. |

This upgrade will increase your backpack size to 18 slots.

Second Upgrade
The second upgrade for your backpack is a little harder to get. Before you unlock the recipe, you’ll need to collect 100 memories after unlocking the Forgotten Temple. You will also need a Tier 3 workbench.

Upgrading your Workbench
Your workbench can be upgraded directly from its interface, on the right side. To do so, you will need the following:
| Material | Quantity | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| Thorium Ingot | 30 | Created by smelting thorium ore in a furnace, commonly found in the desert biome. |
| Cobalt Ingot | 20 | Created by smelting cobalt ore in a furnace, commonly found in snowy regions. |
| Heavy Leather | 30 | Processing heavy hide dropped by large animals, such as bears or crocodiles. |
| Shadoweave Scraps | 50 | Dropped by dark enemies encountered in snow biome temples. |
| Essence of Fire | 25 | Dropped by fire-aligned enemies in volcanic areas. |
Crafting the Upgrade
Once you’ve upgraded your workbench, you’ll have unlocked the ability to craft the second Backpack Upgrade. To do this, you’ll need:
| Material | Quantity | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| Voidheart | 1 | Dropped by void enemies that spawn during nighttime. |
| Adamantite Ingot | 8 | Created by smelting adamantite ore in a furnace, commonly found in the Volcano biome. |
| Storm Leather | 16 | As of version 2026.01.24, this item is only obtainable in Creative mode. |

This upgrade will increase your backpack slots to 27.

Conclusion
Once your backpack is upgraded, exploration gets a whole lot smoother. Fewer trips home, more room for loot, and way less inventory shuffling means you can stay focused on adventuring instead of micromanaging slots. Keep upgrading as you progress, because in Hytale, there’s always one more chest, cave, or treasure just over the next hill.
