For a long time, animals in Hytale were mostly background noise. They wandered, dropped resources, and ran the second you got close. Update 3 has changed that.

Hytale now includes a basic taming system. It is simple, food-based, and still early in development, but it finally allows you to keep livestock near your base instead of constantly chasing them across the map.

If you want permanent horses, organized livestock, and a functional farm loop, here is exactly how taming works and how to do it efficiently.

How to Tame Animals

Taming in Hytale is simple. You build trust with food.

Follow these steps:

  1. Find an animal in the wild.
Most livestock spawn in Zone 1 (Emerald Grove), while horses and camels appear in Zone 2 (Howling Sands).

  2. Hold the animal’s favorite food.
Each species requires a specific item. Using the wrong food does nothing.

  3. Interact with the animal while holding the correct food.
Once fed, the animal becomes tamed.

  4. Avoid hitting it.
If you damage a tamed animal, it will flee and you’ll need to re-tame it.

Once tamed, animals:

  • Stop running away from you

  • Can be petted with an empty hand

  • Can be fed again to maintain happiness

  • Can be milked, sheared, or mounted depending on type

There is currently no breeding system and baby animals do not grow into adults.

Pro Tips

  • Use a Capture Crate to transport baby animals instantly instead of dragging adults across the map.

  • Build a two-block-high enclosure before you start taming.

  • Use a Feed Bag to lure animals into a pen before taming.

  • Tamed animals still wander. A stable or fenced area keeps them predictable and safe.

Tameable Animals and Their Favorite Food

Each animal has a specific food requirement.

Animal Favorite Food
Cow/Calf Cauliflower
Sheep/Lamb Lettuce
Chicken/Chick Corn
Pig/Piglet Brown Cap Mushroom
Rabbit/Bunny Carrot
Boar Red Cap Mushroom
Turkey Corn
Horse/Foal Carrot
Camel Wheat
Goat/Ram/Mouflon Apple
Desert Chicken Corn
Skrill Chili
Warthog Wild Berries
Mosshorn Potato
Penguin Any fish

The Feed Bag attracts animals, but it does not tame them. You must use their specific favorite food.

Animal Utility and Resource Benefits

Taming is not just cosmetic. Livestock play a major role in progression.

Mounts

Horse, Camel
Rideable mounts that dramatically increase travel speed across biomes.

Milk Production

Cow, Mosshorn
Use a bucket to collect milk for cooking.

Wool Supply

Sheep
Shear sheep to obtain Wool Scraps for cloth crafting.

Egg Production

Chicken, Turkey
Chickens placed near a chicken coop will produce eggs automatically.

Fertilizer Production

All Livestock
Animals drop manure, which can be crafted into a Fertilizer Bag to accelerate crop growth.

Capture Crates and Transporting Animals

If you want to build an efficient farm, you need Capture Crates.

  • Works only on baby animals and small creatures

  • Instantly stores them in inventory

  • Releases them at your base

This is the safest way to move livestock long distances.

Strategy tip: Capture juveniles, transport them home, then tame them inside your enclosure.

Current Limitations

The taming system is still basic:

  • No breeding

  • No baby growth

  • No advanced commands

  • Taming breaks if you hit the animal

Expect this system to expand in future updates.

Conclusion

The new taming system in Hytale is simple, but it changes how you approach survival and farming. Animals are no longer temporary resources you chase down and lose. With the right food and secure enclosure, they become part of your infrastructure.

Even without breeding or advanced controls, taming allows you to stabilize food production, secure mounts, and create a reliable fertilizer loop that supports crop growth. Capture Crates remove the frustration of long-distance transport, and proper pen design prevents the usual overnight disasters.

The system is still early, but it lays the groundwork for something much bigger. If you build your farm intelligently now, you will already be set up for whatever expansion the animal system brings next.

Secure the perimeter. Stock the right food. Start small, then scale up.
